Domestica: The reality of all things diapers, laundry, car-pooling, spouse and childrearing.
Beyond Domestica: Searching for life beyond diapers, laundry, car-pooling, spouse and childrearing.
Ever since I had my daughter 2.5 years ago, I have been referring to all things domestic (laundry, cleaning, baby-caring, etc) as, “Domestica”. If I had stacks of dishes in the sink, piles of laundry on the floor and a crying baby, I would always sigh and valiantly say, “Just another day in Domestica…” As if it was this mystical land where all of the chores never got done, babies were always fussy and spouses were always driving you crazy and I was the sole person who could handle it. (Insert Anna’s laugh out loud)
After I had my second baby and my little ‘Domestica’ was in what my mind conjured up as nothing less than chaos. I kept returning back to the phrase, “Beyond Domestica”…as in, extra-terrestrial life, the new frontier, life beyond diapers, poop, and spit up, dishes, dry cleaning and dog hair “There MUST be life Beyond Domestica!”
In my quest to find my life or refind my life Beyond Domestica, I find it helpful, fun and grounding to chronicle most of it. Please feel free to share your own stories of all things Domestica or even dahdahdah…Beyond Domestica. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on this Mamahood journey is the power and importance of community. Bring it on Domestica’s, bring it on!
